The 20-strong dance troupe, The Second Generation, headlines this music programme. Each week, a prominent guest DJ, such as Tony Blackburn or Dave Lee Travis, introduces a lineup of contemporary artists including Slade, The Bee Gees, Lulu, and Electric Light Orchestra. The variety format is rounded out with comedy spots from performers like Spike Milligan and Larry Grayson.
This series was a vehicle for choreographer Dougie Squires and his troupe, The Second Generation, conceived as a successor to his popular 1960s group, The Young Generation. The format was a direct continuation of a proven light entertainment formula: tightly choreographed dance routines were used as a visual counterpoint to performances from the era’s biggest pop stars. Produced by LWT, the programme captured the transition from 60s pop to the glam and rock sounds of the early 70s. One of its dancers, Wei Wei Wong, achieved wider fame shortly after with a prominent role in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun.
