Hosted by Ted Rogers, the game begins with three couples answering general knowledge questions to accumulate prize money, with the lowest-scoring pair being eliminated. The remaining two teams then watch a series of variety acts whose performances contain cryptic riddles related to the prizes.
After a further elimination, the final couple attempts to solve the obscure clues. Their goal is to win a star prize, such as a car or a holiday, while avoiding the show’s infamous booby prize: a brand new dustbin, personified by the robotic mascot, Dusty Bin.
A ratings cornerstone for Yorkshire Television, 3-2-1 dominated the Saturday night schedule for a decade. Adapted from the Spanish format Un, dos, tres… responda otra vez, its success was built on a uniquely bewildering structure that fused a conventional quiz with variety acts and a cryptic endgame.
The show’s logic was often impenetrable; the riddles linking the performances to the prizes were notoriously obscure, making the final round a matter of luck as much as skill. The programme’s identity was inseparable from its host, Ted Rogers, whose signature finger-flick gesture became a national catchphrase. Equally iconic was Dusty Bin, the radio-controlled mascot who became one of the most recognisable figures in British light entertainment.
