This weekly music programme featured a mix of contemporary artists performing their latest singles. Initially hosted by Ayshea Brough, the presenting role was later taken over by the DJ David “Kid” Jensen in his first significant British television job. The series presented a cross-section of the era’s charts, regularly featuring choreographed routines from the resident dance troupe, Zig Zag. Guests included Glam Rock titans like Gary Glitter, Slade, and The Sweet; pop sensations such as The Bay City Rollers, 10cc, and Showaddywaddy; and established acts including The Kinks and Supertramp. A notable Christmas 1974 edition included a performance by Queen.
The series was producer Muriel Young’s deliberate attempt to capture the teenage audience graduating from her earlier children’s pop show, Lift Off With Ayshea. Positioned between the BBC’s chart-focused Top of the Pops and the more serious rock of The Old Grey Whistle Test, 45 offered a spirited, no-frills platform for singles-oriented acts. Produced by Granada, it began as a regional broadcast before its success led to a full network slot and a new title, Rock On With 45. The programme is an important document of the Glam Rock period, but it also gave vital early television exposure to influential new bands from other genres, including a July 1975 appearance by Dr Feelgood.
