Neurotic hostess Beverly has arranged a small drinks party for new neighbours Angela and Tony, along with Sue, the anxious mother of the unseen teenager Abigail, who is having her own party next door. As the evening progresses, Beverly’s attempts at social sophistication, fuelled by alcohol and Demis Roussos records, create an atmosphere of extreme discomfort. The gathering exposes raw marital tensions between Beverly and her stressed husband, Laurence, leading to a disastrous conclusion.
Developed from a stage production at the Hampstead Theatre, this celebrated work was created and directed by Mike Leigh. The teleplay is famous for its use of improvisation, with much of the dialogue developed by the cast through Leigh’s rehearsal methods. Alison Steadman’s performance as the monstrously compelling Beverly became iconic, solidifying her and Leigh’s reputation. The play’s status as a cultural touchstone was cemented when the BBC held a commemorative theme night for its 20th anniversary in 1997.
