A stage magician known only as Tarot (Michael MacKenzie) uses his considerable skills in illusion, escapology, and misdirection to investigate strange and supernatural events. Aided by his young companions, he confronts villains who often possess paranormal abilities of their own, including a sorcerer who claims to be Merlin’s heir and a man who can mentally control insects. Tarot operates from a London bookshop and travels on a customised motorbike.
This children’s programme was notable for its fusion of the adventure and fantasy genres, often presenting its hero with scenarios that bordered on horror. Created by Trevor Preston, the serial presented a more sophisticated and mysterious protagonist than was typical for the timeslot. Over its three-season run, the cast of Tarot’s assistants changed, with telepath Mikki (Petra Markham) and her brother Chas joining the investigations in later episodes. Most of the season 1 and 2 episodes have been lost (a few exist as audio only).
