Across the Years (BBC One 1981-1983)

A series of BBC specials welcoming the New Year from locations across England.

These annual outside broadcasts marked the transition from one year to the next. The 1981 edition was a traditional gathering in Trafalgar Square. The 1982 special, subtitled ‘A Nationwide English Celebration of New Year’s Eve’, was hosted by John Craven (John Craven) and Paul McDowell (Paul McDowell) from a Dickensian-themed party at St Katharine’s Dock in London; guests included adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes (Sir Ranulph Fiennes) and astronomer Patrick Moore (Patrick Moore).

For the final programme in 1983, presenters Marian Foster (Marian Foster) and Eric Robson (Eric Robson) joined revellers at the Greater Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, with Keith Chegwin (Keith Chegwin) among the guests. A recurring motif was the personification of Old Father Time, whose arrival signalled the end of the old year.

Across the Years represents the BBC’s traditional approach to marking a national moment, presenting the New Year’s Eve broadcast as a shared, public event. By moving beyond the familiar confines of Trafalgar Square, the programmes attempted to create a more varied celebration, drawing on the ethos of the flagship magazine show Nationwide. The format blended celebrity appearances with contributions from public figures and musical performances from brass bands and school choirs. This style of gently patriotic, family-oriented presentation was a staple of the BBC’s festive schedule before the era of large-scale, pop-focused concerts came to dominate the turn of the year.
