Adventure To Order (BBC 1961, Michele Dotrice)

A one-off children’s adventure play broadcast live from the BBC’s studios.

Plot details for this single play are not available. The cast of characters included Philip (Lindsay Scott Patton), his Uncle John (Meadows White), Sandra (Michele Dotrice), the villainous Baron Tarzook (Tutte Lemkow), The King (Roger Avon), and The Princess (Gwenda Ewen).

This half-hour play is an early and rare example of a script by Douglas Camfield, who would shortly abandon writing to become one of the BBC’s most dynamic and prolific television directors, particularly on Doctor Who. A fast-paced children’s adventure, it was typical of the disposable live drama produced for the early evening slot. Like much programming from the era, the play was transmitted live and no recording is known to have survived. The cast featured a number of familiar faces, including a juvenile Michele Dotrice, more than a decade before she found fame in the sitcom Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em.
