Afterlife (ITV 2005-2006)

In this supernatural drama, a university lecturer’s skepticism is challenged when he investigates a gifted but troubled psychic medium.

Psychology lecturer Robert Bridge (Andrew Lincoln), a committed skeptic grieving the death of his young son, dedicates his academic work to debunking paranormal phenomena. His rational worldview is profoundly tested when he meets Alison Mundy (Lesley Sharp), a medium whose apparent connection to the spirit world seems genuine. Each installment follows Robert as he observes Alison’s unsettling encounters with the dead and the living people she tries to help. He is forced to question his own scientific certainty, while Alison struggles with the immense emotional and psychological toll of her abilities, supported by her friend Barbara Sinyard (Kate Duchêne). Robert’s colleague, Jude (Anna Wilson-Jones), provides a counterpoint to his increasingly obsessive investigation.

Created by Stephen Volk, Afterlife distinguished itself from its supernatural contemporaries by treating paranormal events as a catalyst for intense psychological drama. The series derived its considerable tension not from ghostly apparitions, but from the finely balanced conflict between Robert’s scientific rationalism and Alison’s intuitive burden. The scripts consistently resisted easy answers, framing the supernatural as a genuine and painful condition for Alison rather than a mystical gift. Its power was rooted in the two central performances: Lesley Sharp’s portrayal of Alison is one of weary, traumatised empathy, while Andrew Lincoln grounds Robert’s intellectual arrogance in a deep, unresolved grief. The production maintained a chilling, melancholic atmosphere, favouring emotional authenticity over conventional genre scares.
