An anthology series of lavish, feature-length adaptations of Agatha Christie’s mysteries, with two actresses inhabiting the iconic role of the spinster sleuth across its run.
In the quiet English village of St. Mary Mead lives Miss Jane Marple (Geraldine McEwan, later Julia McKenzie), an elderly spinster whose gentle exterior conceals a razor-sharp intellect. Over the course of 23 episodes, she encounters a succession of baffling murders during her visits to country estates, seaside resorts, and even on a Caribbean island. While professional detectives are often stumped, Miss Marple applies her profound understanding of human nature, honed by a lifetime of village observation, to uncover the culprits. Each self-contained film features a high-calibre guest cast of well-known actors, drawn into Marple’s orbit of intrigue and murder.
Produced as a companion piece to ITV’s long-running Poirot, this series was defined by two distinct and deliberate interpretations of its lead character. Geraldine McEwan’s portrayal for the first three series was a departure from the more austere versions of the past; her Marple was sprightly and mischievous, a woman whose keen intelligence was masked by a knowing twinkle. Following McEwan’s retirement, Julia McKenzie took over the role, offering a more traditional and understated interpretation that was closer to the character in the novels. The production was also notable for its controversial but commercially successful decision to expand its source material, adapting several non-Marple stories, such as Ordeal by Innocence and By the Pricking of My Thumbs, and placing the spinster detective at the centre of the narrative.
