Aled (BBC One 1987)

A music series in which the celebrated young singer Aled Jones performs a selection of his favourite arias, ballads, and folk songs.

Singer Aled Jones hosts this series of musical performances, recorded just before his retirement from singing at the age of sixteen. Joined by regular accompanists Ingrid Surgenor on piano and Huw Tregelles Williams on organ, Jones presents a variety of his favourite music, including classical arias, popular ballads, and traditional folk songs. Each episode also features performances from special musical guests, including the vocal group Cantabile, the BBC Welsh Chorus, and guitarist Dylan Fowler.

This series was conceived as a final spotlight for Aled Jones’s celebrated treble voice, recorded shortly before its inevitable break. Produced by Welsh independent company Opus 3, the programme was essentially a televised farewell, capturing the unique vocal quality that had made Jones an international star.

The format was a simple and direct presentation of his personal repertoire, mixing sacred music with secular ballads and Welsh folk songs. The series serves as a deliberate and timely document of a famous voice at its peak, preserved on tape just before its natural transformation.
