Alexander Green (Gary Warren) is a schoolboy in suburban London who chafes against the confines of his domestic life. He concocts a series of imaginative schemes to find adventure and a grander purpose, but his aspirations are constantly thwarted by the practical mindset of his father, Joe (Sydney Tafler), and his sister, Renata (Adrienne Posta). Each of Alexander’s attempts to break free from the ordinary becomes a fresh source of domestic conflict and comic misunderstanding within the Green household.
Written by the notable playwright and author Bernard Kops, this ATV sitcom drew its comedy from the specific cultural milieu of a suburban Jewish family in London. The generational clash between Alexander’s imaginative ambitions and his father’s pragmatism formed the series’ central comic engine. Veteran character actor Sydney Tafler provided a consistent anchor as the patriarch, Joe Green, a stability that was not reflected in the casting of his wife, Fay. The role was originated by Libby Morris for the first series before Stella Moray took over for the second and final run.
