All Aboard (ABC 1958-1959)

An early attempt at a continuing serial drama, set aboard a transatlantic ocean liner on its regular voyages.

Life aboard the SS Adriana provides the backdrop for this weekly serial. Regulars, including Janet Fraser (Susan Shaw), Mark Rogers (Richard Coleman), Sydney Barker (Arthur Lowe), Joan Harrison (Avril Angers), and Peter Norton (John Gale), form the core cast. Each voyage introduces new characters and storylines, from romantic entanglements and family disputes to instances of smuggling and stowaways. Recurring figures include Captain Bill Stafford (Charles Morgan) and passengers played by Marion Mathie and a young Richard O’Sullivan.

As one of ABC’s first forays into the continuing serial format, All Aboard functioned as a prototype for the more durable soap operas of the following decade. The shipboard setting was a practical choice: it provided a contained environment for drama and a logical mechanism for introducing a fresh cast of guest characters with each new voyage. This structure allowed for a mix of self-contained weekly plots alongside the developing stories of the main crew. Produced by Guy Verney, the serial maintained a light, conventional tone, balancing mild comedy with gentle melodrama, and served as a vehicle for a strong cast of familiar character actors, most notably Arthur Lowe in an early regular television role.
