In this poignant wartime comedy-drama, a shy Newcastle woman finds an unexpected chance for romance during the Blitz.
The story is set in Newcastle upon Tyne during the Second World War and centres on the Stott family. Helen (Phyllis Logan), the elder daughter, is a plain, self-effacing woman in her thirties who walks with a limp and has resigned herself to spinsterhood. She lives with her pragmatic mother (Joan Plowright), her irreligious, piano-playing father (John Woodvine), her devout Catholic grandfather Andie (Des Young), and her younger, more vivacious sister Joyce (Pippa Hinchley). While Joyce enjoys a lively relationship with her soldier boyfriend Eric (Stephen Tompkinson), the war brings an unexpected opportunity for Helen when she meets Norman (Tom Watt), a gentle and attentive soldier. Their tentative romance, set against the backdrop of air raids and rationing, forms the heart of the play, forcing Helen to confront her deep-seated insecurities and glimpse a future she never thought possible.
Adapted by Jack Rosenthal from the stage play by C.P. Taylor, this television film is a masterclass in intimate, character-driven drama. It sidesteps the grand narratives of combat and espionage, focusing instead on the emotional landscape of the home front. Rosenthal’s script finds its drama and humour in the small victories and quiet heartbreaks of everyday life under immense pressure. The production is a beautifully observed portrait of a family whose domestic struggles are shaped by wartime anxieties; the global conflict serves as a catalyst for a deeply personal story of one woman’s emotional awakening. Phyllis Logan’s performance as Helen is a study in quiet transformation, capturing both her painful shyness and her blossoming self-worth with immense subtlety.
