This series continues the story of Sally Harrison, now Sally Redway (Wendy Craig), following her marriage to widower David Redway (Richard Coleman). Sally’s sons, Simon (Robin Davies) and Peter (David Parfitt), must now adjust to life with a stepsister, David’s studious daughter Jane (Maxine Gordon). The household’s delicate new equilibrium is frequently disturbed by the well-intentioned meddling of Sally’s Auntie Flo (Valerie Lush), with most episodes revolving around minor domestic crises and misunderstandings.
The programme was a straightforward continuation of the popular sitcom ...And Mother Makes Three, retooled to accommodate the marriage of its central character. The new format was a durable vehicle for Wendy Craig, whose television persona as the perpetually flustered but capable middle-class mother was by now firmly established. Craig’s influence extended behind the camera; she wrote several episodes under the pseudonym Jonathan Marr. While the series rarely strayed from the gentle, theatrical predicaments of its predecessor, its success demonstrated the commercial appeal of its star and the resilience of its comforting formula.
