In this long-running BBC drama, a group of student nurses confront the pressures of hospital life and their own personal crises.
Set in the fictional St Angela’s Hospital in London, the serial follows the professional and personal lives of a cohort of student nurses. The initial group includes the privileged Patricia Rutherford (Fiona Fullerton), the pragmatic Jo Longhurst (Julie Dawn Cole), the compassionate Ruth Fullman (Lesley Dunlop), and the ambitious Sita Patel (Karan David). Supervised by figures like the firm but fair ward sister, Miss Windrup (Faith Brook), the young women are thrown into the demanding world of patient care. They grapple with long hours, medical emergencies, and complex ethical decisions. The programme’s cast evolved significantly over its run, introducing new student intakes that included characters like the capable Katy Smart (Shirley Cheriton) and the down-to-earth Vicky Smith (Pauline Quirke).
Angels was conceived as the nursing profession’s answer to Z Cars, a production designed to strip away the romanticism of earlier hospital dramas and present a more authentic, unvarnished account of life on the wards. Produced by BBC Birmingham, the early seasons were distinguished by a commitment to realism.
The scripts addressed the daily grind of training, the emotional toll on the staff, and controversial medical issues. The series maintained a loyal audience and evolved in format. In its later years, it moved to a twice-weekly, 25-minute slot, adopting the faster pace and interwoven storylines of a continuing serial. This change secured its place as a fixture in the BBC’s primetime schedule for nearly a decade.
