Animals (Channel 4 2006)

This feature-length docu-drama examines the ethics of animal testing through a fictional story of corporate science and direct-action activism.

Bob Thornwell (Adrian Rawlins) is the manager of a research facility beginning a two-year trial of a new cancer drug, using beagles as test subjects. Unknown to him, one of his new technicians, Danny Harkman (Michael Colgan), is an undercover activist for the Animal Liberation Front. After secretly filming the distressing laboratory procedures, Danny leaks the footage to the local press, creating a media firestorm that targets Thornwell and his family. As the protest movement escalates, Danny is forced underground, while Thornwell must confront the professional and personal consequences of his work.

The production attempts a hybrid format, blending a fictional narrative with documentary interviews from scientists, activists, and ethicists. The balance, however, is skewed. The fictional plot concerning the activist’s infiltration of the laboratory is given primacy, reducing the real-world contributors to a supporting role. This structural choice weakens the film’s journalistic purpose; the talking-head segments feel less like organic testimony and more like punctuation for the drama. Despite this, the film maintains a degree of impartiality, giving voice to both the utilitarian arguments for animal testing and the moral objections of its opponents. While the subject matter is potent, the docu-drama machinery often gets in the way of a more direct interrogation of the ethics involved.
