Armchair Theatre (ITV 1956-1974)

A landmark anthology series presenting single plays that championed a new wave of gritty, contemporary drama on British television.

As an anthology strand, Armchair Theatre presented hundreds of self-contained plays, drawing on a vast range of writers, directors, and actors. Each week offered a new story, from domestic dramas and social comedies to thrillers and literary adaptations. Early productions were often broadcast live from the studio, a practice exemplified by plays such as The Outsider (1956), starring David Kossoff, and Harold Pinter’s first television play, A Night Out (1960). Over its long run, the series featured performances from many of the industry’s most respected actors, including Billie Whitelaw, Donald Pleasence, and a young Diana Rigg.

Armchair Theatre was arguably the most important drama strand in ITV’s history. While it began in 1956, the series found its definitive voice with the arrival of Canadian producer Sydney Newman in 1958. Newman instigated a radical shift towards contemporary, working-class stories, commissioning a new generation of writers like Alun Owen and Harold Pinter. This focus on gritty realism earned the programme the unflattering but accurate nickname ‘Armpit Theatre’. The hazards of its early live broadcasts were starkly illustrated in 1958 when actor Gareth Jones collapsed and died during a performance of Underground. The strand’s influence was immense: it acted as an incubator for some of television’s most celebrated series. A 1962 adaptation of John Wyndham’s Dumb Martian served as a pilot for the science-fiction anthology Out of This World; a 1967 play, A Magnum for Schneider, introduced the character of Callan; and a 1974 film made for the spin-off strand Armchair Cinema, titled Regan, was the direct precursor to The Sweeney.
