A television play about an unpredictable man whose life is a series of surprises.
This single play centres on the character of Eddie Palmer (Harry Locke), a man for whom “life is one long surprise”. His unpredictable nature shapes the lives of those around him, including Stella (Vanda Godsell), Jess Palmer (Karal Gardner), Philip Palmer (Leonard Cracknell), and Chris Jones (Keith Faulkner).
A product of the BBC’s Bristol studios, Around the Corner is an example of the character-driven single plays that were a cornerstone of television drama in the early 1960s. The teleplay by Barry Thomas, a writer who would go on to script edit Z-Cars for a couple of years in the late sixties and created the 1970’s World War One flying drama series Wings, is constructed entirely around its mercurial central figure. With its focus on a single, unpredictable personality, the production is an example of intimate, small-scale drama originating from one of the BBC’s key regional hubs, a form that was a staple of the schedule before being gradually superseded by the continuing series.
