Jim Bergerac (John Nettles) is a detective sergeant and recovering alcoholic returning to work on the island of Jersey. He is assigned to the Bureau des Étrangers, a department established to handle crimes involving the island’s many non-resident visitors. While contending with his personal demons and a complex relationship with his ex-wife Deborah (Deborah Grant), Bergerac investigates murder, theft, and espionage among the international elite. He often receives assistance, and sometimes complication, from his shrewd and wealthy former father-in-law, Charlie Hungerford (Terence Alexander), whose business interests intersect with many of the island’s affairs.
The series was developed by creator Robert Banks Stewart to fill a primetime slot vacated by the popular detective show Shoestring. By moving the action to the picturesque tax haven of Jersey, the production established a distinct identity, using the island’s unique blend of English and French culture as an integral backdrop. The formula balanced self-contained criminal plots with ongoing character arcs, particularly Bergerac’s struggle with alcohol and his evolving romantic life. A recurring highlight was his cat-and-mouse relationship with sophisticated jewel thief Philippa Vale (Liza Goddard). In later series, the format was altered, with Bergerac leaving the force to become a private investigator, a shift that diluted the show’s core premise.
