Call Oxbridge 2000 (ITV 1961-1962)

In this spin-off from Emergency – Ward 10, a hospital doctor adjusts to the different pressures of life as a general practitioner.

Doctor John Rennie (Richard Thorp) relocates from the busy corridors of Oxbridge General to establish his own GP practice in the same provincial town. The serial documents the medical and personal dramas he encounters, contrasting the high-stakes emergencies of his former post with the more intimate, community-focused problems of general practice. The regular cast included fellow doctors Richard Graham (Noel Howlett) and his family, Peggy (Elizabeth Allan), Steve (Scot Finch), and Alison (Jennifer Kennedy). The second series introduced a new medical family, the Bennetts, to the practice.

An early attempt to build a television universe, Call Oxbridge 2000 transferred a popular character from one of Britain’s most successful serials into a new dramatic context. The move from hospital to local surgery shifted the narrative focus from life-or-death crises to the sustained, complex problems of a community. Produced by ATV and broadcast live, the programme served as an important platform for a generation of actors, featuring early appearances from future stars including Julie Christie and Prunella Scales. Like much television of its era, its existence was ephemeral; only a single episode is known to have survived.
