A broad LWT sitcom chronicling the work-shy antics of two families on a ramshackle caravan site.
On a dilapidated caravan park, neighbours Bert Jones (James Beck) and Wally Briggs (Arthur Mullard) dedicate their lives to avoiding gainful employment. Their endless schemes for quick cash and evading work are a constant source of frustration for their wives, Betty Jones (Jo Rowbottom) and Lily Briggs (Queenie Watts), who struggle to maintain a semblance of domestic order amidst the chaos. Following the second series, Bert Jones was written out and new, upper-class neighbours arrived: the hapless Jeremy Crichton-Jones (Jonathan Cecil) and his wife Susan (Gay Soper), shifting the comedy’s focus to their culture clash with the Briggs family.
From the creators of On the Buses, Ronald Wolfe and Ronald Chesney, Romany Jones was a quintessential example of the era’s broad, working-class sitcom. Its humour was unapologetically earthy, built on the knockabout chemistry between its two male leads. The programme’s trajectory was permanently altered by the sudden death of James Beck midway through its run. The introduction of the Crichton-Jones characters was a necessary pivot, transforming the dynamic from a simple portrait of layabout life into a more conventional comedy of class friction. The popularity of Arthur Mullard and Queenie Watts’ characters was such that, after the series ended, they were given their own spin-off, Yus, My Dear.
