A cynical sitcom chronicling the daily tribulations of a second-rate London theatrical agency.
Dominic Eden (Clive Francis) is the vain and often clueless head of Eden Management, a perpetually struggling West End talent agency. His staff must handle a roster of demanding, obscure, and frequently unemployable clients. The team includes pragmatic American agent Tony (Colin Stinton), the ambitious Atin (Benedict Taylor), and the long-suffering personal assistant Joan (Elizabeth Bennett). In the first series, their colleague is the sharp-tongued Helen (Gabrielle Cowburn), who is replaced in the second by the naive newcomer Vanessa (Emma Cunniffe). Providing a constant, eccentric backdrop are the veteran receptionists Gloria (Irene Sutcliffe) and Enid (Hilda Braid).
From Red Dwarf creators Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, this sitcom presented a caustic view of the less glamorous side of show business. Following a 1993 pilot produced for Carlton’s attempt to redo the BBC’s famed Comedy Playhouse strand, the full series was commissioned by ITV. The humour is rooted in the high-stress, low-reward reality of a middling agency, where every phone call is a potential disaster and every client a professional liability. A key feature of the series was the use of television personalities, including Nicholas Parsons and Jonathan Ross, appearing as exaggerated versions of themselves. This device grounded the agency’s absurd predicaments in a recognisable world of light entertainment, giving the satire a sharper edge.
