A late-night satirical news review that served as an anarchic launchpad for a new generation of comedy talent.
Fronted initially by Iain Lee and Daisy Donovan, the programme satirised the day’s news through a combination of studio discussion, sketches, and pre-recorded reports. Broadcast live multiple nights a week, its format was loose and chaotic by design, aiming for a raw, topical energy. The most memorable segments were the field reports from a team of correspondents who conducted ambush interviews with public figures. These included an early, aggressive persona from Ricky Gervais and, most famously, Sacha Baron Cohen in the guise of the ill-informed but hugely confident Ali G, a wannabe gangster from Staines.
The programme’s reputation rests almost entirely on its extraordinary success as an incubator for talent. Though often crude and inconsistent, its best moments captured a provocative, near-the-knuckle spirit that defined late-90s alternative comedy. Its most significant contribution was the creation of Ali G, a character who became a national phenomenon. Baron Cohen’s interviews with unsuspecting politicians and academics were a masterclass in character comedy and a new form of immersive satire. While less celebrated at the time, Ricky Gervais’s segments as a boorish and offensive pundit provided an early glimpse of the confrontational character work that would define his later career.
