A Children’s Television serial chronicling the exploits of a young Frenchman.
This six-part children’s serial followed the titular hero, Pierre (Yves Ratier). Broadcast live from the BBC’s Lime Grove studios as a segment of the Children’s Television Presents banner, the programme was transmitted on Wednesday afternoons. Specific plot details for the individual instalments are not known to have survived, though episode titles included “In The Café,” “In The News,” “Sunk,” and “Zero Hour.”
The Adventures of Pierre was a showcase for the singular vision of John Hunter Blair, who served as producer and director on the serial, which was scripted by C. E. Webber. Such productions were a staple of early children’s programming, created with limited resources and broadcast live from the studio. As was common for the era, the episodes were not recorded for posterity. This leaves the programme as an example of the ephemeral nature of much of the BBC’s output from the 1950s, with only broadcast records and credit lists remaining as testament to its existence.
