The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse (BBC 1962, Leo McKern)

A celebrated stage thriller is adapted for television, with a distinguished character actor as the physician-turned-criminal.

Dr. Clitterhouse (Leo McKern), a wealthy and brilliant physician, decides that the only way to truly understand the criminal mind is to become a criminal himself. He starts by conducting a series of small-time thefts before assembling a gang of professional crooks, including the impressionable Daisy (Patsy Rowlands) and the cynical Benny Kellerman (John Bennett). While his devoted Nurse Ann (Jill Dixon) remains oblivious, Clitterhouse uses his intellect to plan audacious heists, all in the name of scientific research. His activities inevitably attract the suspicion of Inspector Charles (Robert Cawdron), who begins to investigate the unusually methodical crime wave.

The BBC produced Barre Lyndon’s durable stage play for the fourth time in just fifteen years; its potent blend of crime, comedy, and intellectual gamesmanship made it a reliable choice for the schedules. By 1962, the play had become a firm vehicle for a commanding leading man, and this version was built around the formidable presence of Leo McKern. His interpretation of the title role was particularly noteworthy. With his distinctive moustache and imposing physique, McKern’s Clitterhouse had a physical authority that suggested a comic resemblance to Oliver Hardy, which created a sardonic counterpoint to the character’s cold-blooded experiments in criminality.
